1. A SHREWD FARMER'S STORY
1. 영리한 농부 이야기
Once upon a time there lived a farmer who worked far from his home in the fields of a rich baron.
옛날에 자기의 집에서 멀리 떨어진 부유한 남작의 들판에서 일하는 농부가 살았습니다.
In the past, gangs of bandits hid in the mountains rising behind the plain but the emperor had sent his soldiers to find and kill the thieves and now the area was safe and quiet.
과거에는 산적의 무리들이 평지 뒤쪽으로 솟은 산 속에 숨어 살았지만 황제가 도둑들을 찾아서 죽이기 위해 그의 군사들을 보냈습니다. 그래서 그 지역은 안전하고 평온했습니다.
Every once in a while, however, old weapons from past battles could be found in the fields.
그렇지만 이따금씩 과거의 전쟁에 쓰였던 오래된 무기가 들판에서 발견되기도 했을 것입니다.
While he was chopping a stump one day, the farmer found a bag full of gold.
어느 날 농부는 나무를 베다가, 황금이 가득 들어있는 가방을 발견했습니다.
The farmer had only ever seen silver coins in his life, and he was so astonished to find all that gold, that when he started walking home it was already dark.
농부는 살면서 기껏해야 겨우 은화를 보았을 뿐이었기 때문에, 그것이 몽땅 다 금인 것을 알고는 매우 깜짝 놀랐습니다. 그가 집으로 돌아가기 시작했을 때는 이미 날이 저물어 있었습니다.
On his way home, the farmer thought about the problems that this sudden wealth could cause him.
집으로 가는 도중에, 농부는 갑작스런 부가 그에게 미칠 문제(영향)에 대해서 생각했습니다.
First of all, everything found on the baron's territory belonged to the baron.
우선 먼저, 남작의 영지에서 발견되는 모든 것은 남작에게 속한 것이었습니다.
By law, the farmer had to hand the gold over to the baron.
법적으로 농부는 남작에게 그 금을 넘겨주어야만 했습니다.
The farmer decided that it was much more fair for him to keep the treasure because he was very poor, rather than giving it to the baron who already had a lot of money.

He realized the risk he would run if anyone found out about his luck.

He would never tell anyone, of course, but his wife had a reputation for talking too much and she would never keep a secret.

Sooner or later he would end up in jail.

He thought the problem over and over until he found a solution.

Before getting home he left the bag full of gold in a bush next to some pine trees and the day after, instead of going to work, he went by the village to buy a few nice trout, some doughnuts and a rabbit.
집으로 돌아오기 전에 그는 금이 가득 들은 가방을 소나무들 옆에 있는 덤불에 남겨두고는 다음 날, 일을 하러 가는 대신에 그는 마을로 가서 몇 마리의 송어와, 약간의 도넛, 한 마리의 토끼를 샀습니다.
In the afternoon he went home and said to his wife: "Get your wicker basket and come with me. Yesterday it rained and the wood is full of mushrooms. We must get to them before someone else does!"

The wife, who loved mushrooms, picked up her basket and followed her husband.

When they got to the woods the farmer ran to his wife shouting: "Look! Look! We have found a doughnut tree!" and he showed her the branches he previously loaded with doughnuts.

The wife was astonished but she was even more puzzled when, instead of mushrooms, she found trout in the grass.

The farmer laughed happily.
농부는 행복하게 웃었습니다.
"Today is our lucky day! My grandfather said that everyone has one lucky day. We might even find a treasure!" In addition to being a gossip, the farmer's wife was also a sucker. So she believed her husband and repeated, while looking around: "This is our lucky day, this is our lucky day."
“오늘은 우리의 행운의 날이야! 나의 할아버지께서 말씀하시길 모든 사람들은 평생에 한번 행운의 날을 가지고 있대. 우리는 심지어 보물도 찾게 될거야!” 그의 아내는 수다쟁이일 뿐만 아니라 매번 잘 속는 사람이었습니다. 그래서 그녀는 그녀의 남편을 믿고는 주변을 둘러보면서 계속 말했습니다. “우리의 행운의 날이야. 우리의 행운의 날이야.”
The basket of the woman was full of fish by now.

When she and her husband reached the banks the farmer ran ahead of her, looked into the thicket and said: "Yesterday I laid out my nets and I want to check whether I've caught any fish or shrimps."

A few minutes later the wife heard the husband shout: "Run and see what I've caught! What extraordinary luck! I've fished a rabbit!"

They were walking back home and the wife kept talking excitedly about the great dinner with the doughnuts, the fish and the rabbit.

The husband said: "Let's go by the wood again. We could find other doughnuts!"

They went to the spot where the farmer had hidden his gold coins.
그들은 농부가 그의 금화를 숨겨놓았던 지점으로 갔습니다.
The farmer pretended to find something. "Look over here! There's a strange bag and... it's full of gold! This is an enchanted forest. We found the doughnuts on the trees, then we found the trout in the grass and now... gold."
농부는 무언가를 발견한척 했습니다. “여기와 봐! 이상한 가방이 하나 있고... 금으로 가득 차 있어! 이곳은 마법에 걸린 숲이야. 우리는 나무에서 도넛을 찾았고, 그런 다음 풀밭에서 송어를 찾았고, 지금은... 금이야.”
The poor woman was so excited that tears filled her eyes.
그 가여운 여인은 너무 흥분해서 눈에 눈물이 가득 찼습니다.
She could not utter another word and gulped as she touched the shiny coins.
그녀는 어떤 말도 입 밖에 낼 수 없었고 반짝이는 금화를 만지면서 (감정을 참으며) 끅끅거렸습니다.
At home, after dinner, neither of the two could fall asleep. The farmer and his wife kept getting up to look over the treasure they had hidden in an old boot.
집에서, 저녁식사 후에, 둘 다 잠을 이루지 못했습니다. 농부와 아내는 그들이 낡은 장화 한 짝 안에 숨겨놓은 보물을 바라보며 계속 깨어 있었습니다.
The day after the farmer went back to work, but first said to his wife: "Don't tell anybody about what happened yesterday." And he repeated the same recommendation every day after that. Pretty soon, however, the entire village had heard about the treasure.
다음날 농부는 일하러 가기 전에 그의 아내에게 말했습니다. “어제 일어났던 일에 대해서 아무에게도 말 하지마.” 그리고 그는 그 뒤로 매일같이 같은 충고(당부)를 반복했습니다. 그러나 곧바로 온 마을 전체가 보물에 대해서 듣게 되었습니다.
The farmer and his wife were called by the baron and when they went in to see him the farmer tried to stand behind his wife.
그 농부와 아내는 남작에게 불려갔고 그들이 남작을 만나러 들어갔을 때 농부는 그의 아내 뒤에 서려고 했습니다.
His wife, at the request of the baron, spoke first of the doughnuts, then of the trout on the grass and lastly of the rabbit in the river.
그녀의 아내는 남작의 요청으로, 먼저 도넛에 대해서 말하고, 그 다음 풀밭 위의 송어에 대해 말하고, 마지막으로 강에서의 토끼에 대해 말했습니다.
Meanwhile, behind her, the husband kept tapping his forehead with his finger and gesticulating to the baron.
그 동안에, 그녀의 뒤에서, 남편은 계속해서 손가락으로 이마를 가볍게 두드리면서 남작에게 제스추어를 취했습니다.
The baron began looking at the woman with pity. "And then I bet you found a treasure, too." "That's right, Sir!" the woman said.
남작은 그녀를 동정심으로 쳐다보기 시작했습니다. “그 다음엔 내가 장담하는데 보물 역시 발견했겠지.” “맞아요, 남작님!” 그녀가 말했다.
The baron turned to the farmer and tapping his finger on his forehead sympathetically said: "I see what you mean. Unfortunately, I have the same problem with my wife ..."
남작은 동정심에 가득 차서 손가락으로 이마를 두드리며 농부에게 답했습니다. “무슨 뜻인지 알겠다. 불행하게도, 나도 같은 문제를 가지고 있다네 나의 아내가...”
The farmers were sent home and no one believed their story. And so the shrewd farmer didn't go to jail and spent his money wisely.
농부 부부는 집으로 돌아오게 되었고 그들의 이야기를 믿는 사람은 아무도 없었습니다.
그리고 꾀가 많은 농부는 감옥에 가지도 않고 그의 돈을 현명하게 사용하였답니다.
